Each autumn, I offer guided tours of my family’s productive garden here at Kyneton, one hour north-west of Melbourne. These tours are very popular with gardening clubs, community garden members, workplace groups, permaculture classes and interested readers. Individuals are also welcome to book a tour.
What’s involved in a private garden tour?
We assemble indoors for a quick introduction to the property, review the design and look at a few photos that show how the property has changed over time. This is also an opportunity for members of the group to make themselves a cuppa.
After the brief introduction we head into the garden and explore:
- the kitchen garden, to discuss the garden layout
- the citrus grove, to explore microclimates
- the “market garden” to review construction, irrigation and edible forest gardens
- the netted enclosure to learn about growing berries, backyard orchards, integrating chickens and espaliered fruit trees.
There are 30 minutes at the end of the tour for participants to wander through the garden, take photos and ask questions.
What visitor facilities are available?
In the studio classroom we have tea and coffee facilities. There is a dedicated toilet and ample parking.
Many of our paths and surfaces are gravel or woodchip mulch. Some surfaces are uneven and there are steps involved. If you have mobility issues, please check with us before booking to ensure we can meet your needs.
When are the tours conducted?
I host these tours by appointment on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursday and Fridays in autumn (March to May). Each tour runs for 90 minutes, plus an extra 30 minutes at the end for participants to enjoy the garden at their leisure.
Longer visits, discussions of particular topics or extended visits to incorporate on-site meetings such as AGMs, team building exercises etc may be available on request. Please contact me using the form below to discuss your needs.
What size groups can be accommodated?
The ideal group size is 10 to 20 people to ensure that everyone in the group can hear me and have opportunities to ask questions. For groups larger than 30, parking and squeezing everyone into the classroom is a bit trickier. I encourage carpooling to make this easier.
How much does a private garden tour cost?
The cost for these tours is $200 (inc GST) per group of up to 30 people. Tours must be paid in full to confirm the booking. At the time of booking, I will send you an invoice, with bank details, to enable you to make a bank transfer.
Do you offer catering?
I offer tea and coffee facilities. You are welcome to bring your own food to share with the group. Alternatively, you can arrange catering through a local Kyneton business such as Piper Street Food Co, Fed Foodstore and Catering, or Monsieur Pierre.
I’m not part of a group or organisation. Can I still book a tour?
Yes! Individuals, couples, family groups or small groups of friends are welcome to book a private garden tour. The cost is the same as for a group tour ($200 per group).
