Due to a recent staff promotion, Leaf, Root & Fruit Gardening Services have a position vacant in our team of edible landscapers and urban farmers.
This is a fantastic opportunity for an enthusiastic team player, keen to share the excitement in encouraging the development of sustainable, edible gardening in Melbourne. You’ll have the ability to operate autonomously, as well as fit seamlessly into our team of Urban Farmers. Attention to detail is of the utmost importance, in this role.
This position is an entry level position to the business. Urban Farmers are the primary labour force to implement our projects, and run our ongoing programs. In doing so, they gain valuable skills, insight and knowledge, that may enable them to transition into other roles within the business. As your skills grow, so will your level of responsibility (and pay rate). Our aim is to train you, to become a core business team member and help in driving positive change across Melbourne.
The successful candidate will be involved in many aspects of the business, including:
- Ongoing garden maintenance and urban farming
- Garden makeovers and the planting of edible forest gardens and foodscapes
- Construction of cypress garden beds and wicking beds
We are seeking someone with experience in the horticulture industry. Qualifications in horticulture or Permaculture Design are considered most advantageous.
This position will involve manual labour and working with noisy power tools. You will have to deal with stinging nettles, spiders and dog turds. We work in all weather conditions, including heat, rain and wind. The role is very active and requires someone who is physically fit.
There are many rewarding aspects to the role. Immerse yourself in suburban ecosystems and observe nature in action. Enjoy inspiring and supporting gardeners, of all ages on their journey towards a more sustainable lifestyle. Get your hands in the dirt and transform outdoor spaces into aesthetic, low-maintenance foodscapes. There will be many chances to enjoy the proud, satisfied feeling of “achievement” in this position!
This commences as a casual position. Hours worked will vary from week to week and season to season. Initially, we anticipate you will work 4 days per week (but days can be more or less due to demand and seasons in the garden.). Most of the work will be Monday through Thursday, with the occasional Friday or Saturday. You will need to be available to work on any of these days at short notice. There may be a chance to increase the number of hours worked, as the business continues to grow and more hours become available. Pay rate is $22 to $30 per hour plus Super. Pay rate to be negotiated based on skills and ability. There is also an allowance for staff using their own vehicles for work related travel.
